There is a group in Beckley, WV that is the beginning phase of establishing an Off-Leash Dog Park. The committee is call the BARC PAC (Beckley Area Recreation for Canines Planning and Advisory Committee)comprised of interested dog owners in the community. We are in the process of asking the public officials to allocate 3 acres of land for the project. The plan will be to have 2 seperate area for dog runs(1 for small dogs under 20 lbs plus 1 for large/med canines). We envision the park to be just like any other public park with trees, benches, bathroom facilities, parking lot, lights, water for the dogs, an activity area for dog events, etc... This place will be a place not only to socialize their canines but also a great place for people to relax and socialize with other people who share a common interest. This project appears to be a major undertaking but the people in the community seems willing to support the project. The community volunteers and the planning committee circulated a petition and obtained almost 2000 signatures within a 3 week period of time. Any ideas and suggestions on how to proceed would be most welcomed.

I first went there not long after it opened, a beautiful setting with a new BIG dog park and kiddie park. But along the trail, there was poison ivy everywhere, with HUGE hairy poison ivy vines growing up the trees. It was in the woods along the parking lot and the path to the park, and on the other side of the path by the kiddie park, even all over the ground right by the benches parents would use when watching their kids at the park. They had just been cutting it, trying to kill the big vines, and it was in the air and I started having trouble breathing, it lasted a couple of days, but was awful for about 24 hours. I talked to county workers there, and they didn't seem to care. I asked for signs to be posted, that they continue to try to get rid of it. I called the county too, to deaf ears. Yesterday, I went back and it's still there, and no signs, no warning at all, no fence or roped off area to keep people out. This is very dangerous. Dogs, kids, parents and pawrents, it's easy to get into it and poison ivy sucks.

Canine Station at University Park will be the second dog park in the city. This dog park has some great features including a separate small dog area, a pond, and agility equipment. I just opened in early 2009, so check it out.

Just south of Akron is Portage Lakes State Park which opened a new dog park in summer 2008. This dog park is fenced but still allows access to the lake for the dogs.

Cruse Dog Park just opened a in late 2008 and is the first dog park in the Springfield and Ozarks area. This dog park took years of planning and fund raising plus much work by the County to be created.

Stanley's Spot Dog Park in Morgantown, West Virginia, is in the process of getting a face lift. The dog park will re-open this spring 2009. Let us know if you know what upgrades this park is getting.

Creve Coeur Dog Park is located in Conway Park, which is run by the City of Creve Coeur. They just opened this new dog park in the summer. Looks like a great location for dogs to go to run and play.

In the newest plans by Meckenburg County near Charlotte, North Carolina, there is plans for a new dog park in Steele Creek. This dog park will be at the new Berewick District Park. The construction will be begin in 2009 on the general park.

Frazier Dog Park is the newest dog park in uptown Charlotte. Mecklenburg County has already built four other dog parks in the area. There may be other dog parks coming soon in the general area as well.

Forsberg / Iron Spring Dog Park is the newest dog park in the greater Denver area. It is located in Lakewood in west Denver. This dog park is said to very nice and new with grass and plenty of room for energetic pups to play.

The Red Dog Park just opened in Stone Mountain over the summer in 2008. It is fully fenced and has a separate small dog area. It looks like quite the place to check out.

Dogwood Park is a 2.5 acre off leash dog park at Hunter Wright Stadium. This dog park just opened a few weeks ago on December 9th, 2008. This dog park took over a year to plan and started with community citizens emailing requests to the city for a dog park.

Burbank Dog park is under construction as of 2008; this will be the third dog park in Baton Rouge. BREC just opened the second dog park in Baton Rouge in May 2008 at City Park. There is plans for several more dog parks in the area possibly at Greenwood Community Park, Highland Road Community Park, and Zachary Community Park.

Bellevue residents are getting there second dog park at Jewell Park. Most people are just starting to learn about the first dog park that was opened last year in the nearby LaPlatte area. The new dog park will be opening in phases and the first phase will be done this month, December 2008. It is time to get out and have some fun in Nebraska with your dog. The area seems to have quite a few secret leash-less dog spots to choose from.

Levels Road Park open in fall 2008. This is a brand new park and we are having a bit of trouble pin pointing it on the map. If you know where the marker should go, we would be very happy if you would share it with us. This is a brand new park and the dog park is slated to open before the entire park is finished. It will have separate small and large dog areas.

Iron Hill Dog Park will be a fenced dog park created by the New Castle County. New Castle County has provided several other dog parks or off leash zones in the area. This new dog park is suppose to have separate areas for large and small dogs.

Couer d'Alene dog park and new animal shelter has been approved. Let us know if there is more information on when this dog park will be built and open. Sounds like the county really needs the new animal shelter as well.

The Nampa Dog Park is slated to open in summer 2009 if all goes as planned. They have a 6 acre piece of land set aside and locals are collecting donations to get the best dog park they can.

The Hot Springs Bark Park land has been set aside for some time now. The city had approved this location in 2006 but a non-profit organization is still trying to raise funds to get the dog park built. Keep us posted as to the progress of this dog park.

Recently the Bentonville Bark Park was started. This dog park has a lot of funding already and will have many special features. It is supposedly receiving a huge donation of $50,000 from a pet related company. See the articles on the dog park page for more information.

Selma Olinder Dog Park opened officially on 12/12/08. The dog park has a separate small dog area, wood chip and gravel. This dog park was built by the city in one of the more heavily populated parts of the city. Some of the more popular dog parks in San Jose (see Butcher Park) can easily have 100 dogs at any given time and seem to be some of the most used park space in the city. As a reminder, dog owners should always walk their dogs on leash in and out of the dog park, pick up after your dog at all times, dogs must have all their shots, and dogs in heat are not allowed in the park.

The City of Milton will get its first dog park very soon. It will be called Tails N Trails Dog Park. Many volunteer hours and donations are making this dog park possible. They currently have a list of donors on the city website.

The new dog park will be located in Moblie, Alabama at Medal of Honor Park. Currently, they are doing fund raisers for this park and have the support of the city.

The Bark Park will be located at George Ward Park. They hope to have fencing and open this park by early 2009. The local community is doing fund raisers and events to support this dog park. Check out the Alabama page for more details and the announcements of events in that area.

The Rice Ranch Community Dog Park is being built along with the new housing development and new park in this area. It is all still under construction. This is in Santa Barbara county and will be fully fenced with a section for large and small dogs. Let us know if you go visit it and have more information.

Horsham Dog Park is in Kohler Park located in the great Philadelphia area of Pennsylvania. The park opened Saturday October 25, 2008 and is supported by a local non-profit, Friends of Horsham Dog Park, Inc.

Lincoln Dog Park just opened a couple of months ago in June 2008 officially. It is time to check out the new dog park if you are in the area.

Three dog parks have been approved in Washington DC after years of leash laws were changed in 2008 and now allow the Park District to legal build dog parks. The most recent location to be approved for a new dog park is Kingsman Field. This dog park will be built in 2009.

The Kernersville Dog Park just opened. This dog park was officially named the Vivian F. Bennett Memorial Dog Park. Many hours of hard work and fundraising went into the creation of this park and now it is time for fun.

Pompano Beach Dog Park was just approved by the city. The location has been set for near the airport. We hope to keep this dog park updated as to its progress and opening date. It usually takes a few months to a year to get the fences up and the turf down before the dog park can open but it is coming....

Wellington Dog Park in Kentucky just opened a few weeks ago in early Fall 2008. The city is still adding amenities like shade trees. But we hear that the dogs are enjoying it already even without the finishing touches.

McAllister is the City of San Antonio's second dog park. I hear these parks are bright happy places for dogs with a lot to do.

The American Canyon dog park just opened in September 2008 and their brand new Veterans Memorial Park. The park still may get more amenities like permanent bathroom facilities. This could be a fun new place to check out.

This off-leash dog park has just renovated its parking lot. This park has three big lakes where your dogs can enjoy swimming. There is a bike trail and walking trail for about a 2 miles around this forest reserve. Meadowbrook Dog Park in the Tehachapi and Golden Hills area of Kern County near Bakersfield, California is finally open. The grand opening was late September 2008. I am sure there are many happy dogs in the area.

Baytown Dog Park will be the newest park in the Houston area. It is still in the building phase; but it has been fully approved. There is a group taking tax deductible donations for the creation of this park.

This dog park is in the planning stage as of September 2008. Violet Township says they believe it will cost about $110,000 to install a 4 acre park at the proposed location. The community needs to raise half of the funds and the township says they have the other half of the funding.

This dog park is fully approved and under construction. Check back to see when it opens.

This dog park had a lot of community support and just opened in Vermont. It is one of the few fully fenced parks we have found in Vermont and know their will be many happy tails here.

This is Park City's new and improved dog park. It is scheduled to open August 2008 with new wood chips and a drinking fountain.

The City of Sandy believes their first dog park was such a success they are in the process of planning and building a second dog park. We will keep this updated as we get more information on the possible opening date. If you have any more info or live in the area and want to snap a picture of the construction that would be great.

The West Jordan dog park is just opening or about to open. The gates are sometimes locked and sometimes unlocked depending on the condition of the sod. But it is ready for use and its grand opening ceremony should be in October 2008.

Utah has a new park that just opened: South Ogden Dog Park. Their visitors have already give us some pictures. Hooray!

The Feather River Dog Park of Stockon, CA has been under construction since Nov 2007. This park will open with an agility course, separate dog areas and a art statue.

It has come to our attention that the Fullerton Pooch Park is being improved. The Large Dog Area is getting a small makeover, the grass is getting revitalized. It is always great news when cities value the parks enough to keep the maintenance up.
