We LOVE the Small Dog Area of the Park!
5

Sweetheart and I began coming to the Bear Creek Dog Park near the beginning of this year. How I wish we had come earlier!

We started over on the Big Dog side, not realizing that there was a Small Dog Area further south. Sweetheart is an 18 pound Lhasa Apso who has diabetes and is blind...the big dogs really intimidate her! I had her on-leash, but ended up picking her up. It was then I noticed the Small Dog side. We now spend the majority of our time in the SDA, with an occasional trip over to the creek. However, whenever we're in the BDA, I keep her on-leash for her own safety and security.

Because Sweetheart was never socialized until she was almost 7 years old, she never learned to play. Coming to the Dog Park has been such a good thing for her... and for me, too! We both love checking out the park, Sweetheart with her nose and I with my eyes. The people in the SDA are fantastic... the majority super dog-lovers who feel their dogs are simply furry children. Everyone I've met there so far have been good doggy parents, picking up after their babies and keeping a close eye on them. (Smaller dogs tend to run in smaller circles than their larger counterparts, so they're easier to keep up with!)

I love seeing so many smiling, happy dogs and people. We both leave the park in a good mood and feeling quite content.

Bear Creek Dog Park is the absolute best! Try it out!
And if you come into the SDA, come over and say "Hi" to Sweetheart and I. We'll be the two with silly grins on our faces!

Last weekend 3 or 4 pitbulls

Last weekend 3 or 4 pitbulls started chasing my dog as soon as we entered the park. Within 5 minutes a pitbull was on my 25 pound dog, and when I told the owner he should have his pit on a leash he adamantly blamed my dog for the fight. I was quite upset at this point, and leashed my dog and began to leave the park, while some other dog owners who had nothing to do with it felt the need to put in their two cents and tell me how much they resent my comment about pits being leashed. The owner of the pit that attacked my dog then let his dog go to continue to run in the park, right after it attacked my dog! This owner had no control over his animal, right before she attacked my dog he had been shouting her name over and over, and she was not listening, she was chasing my dog. Not one of those owners of the other pits, and one girl who didn't even have a pit, asked if my dog was o.k. They were so busy defending their breed, and verbally attacking me, that they did not care that another animal could be hurt or worse. These types of owners, who show total irresponsibility for their dog, is why pitbulls get such a bad rap.

Dog aggression can appear at any time no matter how much they are socialized. A lot of them do not want to face the fact that their beloved pet has the potential to kill without notice. All dogs fight, but, getting a pit off a dog is vastly different than getting a poodle off a dog. After 2 years, I won't be returning to this park because of the uncaring, inconsiderate dog owners who ruin it for everyone else. Love your breed by protecting it, and not allowing these situations to occur.

Awesome Dog Park

Being a military family we have been alot of places. This dog park has blew a hole in my thoughts about dog parks. Its huge, tons a room to roam. Nice size small dog park. Of course there is the creek that runs right in it. And always has water. There is a water station next to the main entrance gate that people will bring gallon jugs full of water for, and of course the creek and always running. Plenty of shade and nice places to sit. And doggie bag stations with trash cans all over the park.

Tried this park today
5

I brought 3 of my small dogs to this park this morning and they loved it! I loved it! We spent about 2 hours in the big dog part of the park and had a blast. My cairn terrier loves other dogs of all sizes and he made an appearance every 10 minutes or so. At the very end when it was time to leave, I had to hunt him down and it was very clear he had discovered the creek. He was soaking wet and happy. He make it very clear he did not want to leave. It is quite a drive for me in Peyton but well worth the drive.

The small dog park area was also really nice. Lots of trees and greenery - nice landscaping. I think I counted 4 picnic tables.

One note of caution - one of my dogs is an 8 pound yorkie. I brought my three dogs into the park one at a time and Emmie was the last one I brought in. My friend was keeping an eye on them while I went back to the car to get my water bottle and a jug of water. I turned to go back to the park and saw Emmie coming towards me with my friend chasing her. Emmie had managed to slip through a small hole in the bottom of the gate. I didn't think there was a gap that big but she surprised me. She is not an escape artist but just wanted to get to her mommie. Otherwise - a great time was had by all!!

I havent tried this park out

I havent tried this park out yet my dogs have never been to a dog park but it sounds great we have a sheltie and american bulldog I just worry about the bulldog bc she can get a little agressive towards other dogs recently she doesnt bite but she growls and barks I might just keep her on the leash the first time to see how it goes

please pick up after yur dog

This is a great park, for dogs and their humans. The park has several baggie stations and trash cans, so please, if you see your dog defecating, use the baggies and pick it up. There are also tennis balls spread all over the 25 acres, so on your way back, watch for lost balls and return them to the bin by the gate. Courtesy pays.

Hi Kris

This park will be ideal for your two pups. There will be lots of room for your husky. At the chihuahua's age, I would probably carry her in the big dog park, and let her explore in the little dog area. Those big dogs can sometimes get rambunctious. Almost everyone I met is pretty tolerant of doggy behavior, as long as they aren't super aggressive. Our big lab was kind of aggressive at first, but has really loosened up now. He wants other dogs to play and makes growling noises that have upset some people. Our tiny malti-poo started in the little dog area, but now goes in the big dog area and has only had one bad experience...and that was with another little dog!!!LOL. Enjoy the park, but if your dog won't come normally when you call, don't expect him to when he has this great playground to explore. PS Bring a gallon of water to share, especially now that it is getting warm, and take an empty jug home to refill when you return.

new

hey guys I am new to the area just moved from texas 2 weeks ago I just recently got 2 dogs one is a very hyper 7 month old husky that has only been socialized a little with smaller dogs and the other is a 9 week old chihuahua that thinks she is a big dog. i was wondering if this would be a good place to take them or if you could recommend a smaller park just to get them started with the socialization process and to get them used to the come command. I'm not to worried about the little one as she is stuck to my side like glue but the larger one hasn't had any training and seems like he has been abused and is trying to see how far he can push us because he knows I wont hit him. lol They are both really good dogs though and from what little I've been able to socialize them they've done well.

Our girl got to run her four little legs off in this park with no restrictions, we kept a solid eye on her as she made so many friends both furfriends and furless friends. She loved the brushy areas as I feel her inner beagle came out to sniff for rabbits. Unsuccessfully (thank goodness for the rabbit, lol) but she still had a blast.
This dog park (as far as humans go) are full of mostly very kind and polite humans. In some parks we have been to, we often wonder why the humans bring their dogs to the dog parks at all because they never want other dogs to be near their dogs. So what's the point? Isn't it a place for socializing your pets? LOL. Well, here luckily, the humans were all into the dogs socializing and even the humans socialized as well which I wish was more the case everywhere but at least we have Bear Creek.
Sally loved her day there as did we and we look forward to going back again for many more pictures and home movies of our pup having the time of her life.
Sally says "four paws!" :)

My husband and I have been taking our two labs to this park every weekend on Saturday and Sunday mornings. We love this park and so do our dogs. We have never had a problem with agressive dogs. The only problem we have ever encounterd were parents who bring small children to the park and then get upset when their kids get accidentally knocked down by dogs having fun. Its a DOG park not a playground. Fantastic dog park. We love it.

We took our 2 dogs to Bear Creek for the first time today and had a blast! We have a 5 year old Rottie mix that we rescued 9 months ago and a 6 month old Rottie puppy (both girls) and we didn't know what to expect. We kept the puppy on a leash because she hasn't gone to obedience school yet and let the 5 yr old run off leash. They played well with other dogs of all sizes and breeds and didn't get into any scuffles. All of the dogs we encountered were well-balanced and well-behaved. We learned we need to work more on the "come" command with our older dog, but that is a small thing to fix. We will certainly be going back many times, even considering it takes us 20-30 minutes to get there! :)

Thank you for your

Thank you for your comments!! I have a puppy who is not good on the come here command yet. We will check out this park, but I think we may just keep our puppy on a long leash.

Dogs able to escape

We started taking our two dogs to this park in January. It was wonderful to see them run and play freely with other dogs. Until, one day a few weeks ago, they found a way out. We knew of the two areas dogs could escape - the end of the creek on the west side, and the gate along the south side. Yes, I mention the gate because one day it was left wide open.

After searching the park, we decided to take the car and look for them. A watchful man, who I will be eternally grateful to, saw them run across 21st street, head north and ran into a development. We pulled out on 21st and were going to turn into the development. At that moment, they ran out in front of our car. We pulled over, called them and they came to us. Two dog angels were watching over our girls.

Thank, God, they weren't hit by a car and injured or killed. There is no notice anywhere in the park that alerts people to these open spots. We wonder how many others there are. We thought, at first, it was safe.

We're sad to say we'll never go there again. Our dogs are too precious to us to take such chances. Dog owners SHOULD be warned about potential escape routes their dogs can take.

Wonderful Park!
5

Just moved here from Buffalo, NY and was amazed at the size and quality of this dog park. I have become so accustomed to seeing signs for "NO DOGS ALLOWED" in almost every city park that I stopped taking my dog out to play. The city built a "dog park" which was a baseball diamond surrounded by fencing, no water, no trashcans, no bags.
Bear Creek Park was such a nice surprise for me....I will definitly be back :) Thank you for providing such a nice space for dogs and their owners to have fun and unleash some energy.

I think it's great but my dogs think it's FANTASTIC!!!

I discovered the part a couple of years ago and my two Cairn Terriers beg me to take them all the time. I haven't experience any bad behavior other than the usual dogs working out the pecking order thing. The times I've been around and/or involved, they always worked it out between themselves with us parents only having to call their name to get them back on the trail. I think the park is the greatest thing ever. I love being able to let them off the leash and be dogs, and watch them run, run, run...

Today was my family had ever gone to the park and we broght our 15week old English Mastiff, 3 year old Jack Russell plus our children who are one and two and it was a wonderful experience! There was only one semi aggressive dog and even that wasn't too much a bother. We loved it! And we were very comfortable letting our dogs (and children) run free! :) We will definitly be regulars.

This is a great park. People and dogs are generally very friendly and considerate. Aggressive dogs are a rarity. If there is a negative it's with the human patrons that aren't considerate about cleaning up after their dogs. There are always lots of bags for picking up, so it would be great if everyone observed the posted protocol.

Love the park, but people please close the gates behind you.

I drive to this park from Canon City to let my dogs socialize. It is well worth the hour plus drive. I haven't met any of the aggresive dogs. The only problem I have had is people not closing the gates. Several times I have found the gate on the west side of the park standing wide open. Common sense people. Please close the gate behind you.

This Dog Park has it all. Great space for dogs to explore. Creek is beautiful and clean as are all other areas. I have NEVER had a proplem with agressive dogs. I suppose if a dog hasn't been socialized with other dogs prior to their visit a fight could occur. But that's not the dogs fault now is it. Super place for dog lovers and their canine pals

Best Park Ever

I love taking my 4 dogs to Bear Creek Dog Park. They always have an awesome time. I like that it is so large and not overwhelming with dogs in a small place. When I go I let my dogs play in the creek, than we take a long walk off-leash. I would recommend this park to anyone with a well behaved dog who responds well off leash to voice commands. I drive 15 miles one way to take my dogs to Bear Creek. Awesome Park and worth the drive!!!

Park rules

The park usage rules are posted on three large signs. One is right inside the main entrance off the parking lot (the South Set of double vestibule gates. There is also a set of rules posted in the center of the North side of the walking loop and a third posted at the North West corner of the loop trail. They have been their at least 5 years. The bulletin board kiosk East side also has the official Parks Dept. procedure for reporting aggessive dog behavior, including failure of owners to remove their dog from the park when they become aggressive, as is required in the park rules.

Park Rules

What are the rules at this park?
ANSWER: we were unable to find the rules on the El Paso County website. Sometimes the rules are posted at the entrance to the park. You may need to contact this county's park department to get the answer.

First time visitor from Pueblo

We heard about this park from a friend and decided to take the drive 30 mins up the road to check it out. I think our dogs had a blast and we would love to visit again. Pueblo has a dog park but this one is larger and has more activity for the dogs. Love the creek and the hills for the dogs to climb and it was not a bad work out for me as well. The people seemed nice and we did not have any issues with any of the other dogs. I would highly recommed you take your best buddy here and spend some quality time with nature. Hope to be back soon. :)

Daily Adventure
5

My family and I love this park! We have been taking our daily dog park adventure for three years and we love it even more now than when we first went. I have 4 dogs, two large and two small dogs, and they all seem very capable of making friends with other dogs there. My husband and I have frequently discussed how everyone at the park seems to be smiling. The people and dogs are happy to be there and are enjoying the park. But like taking kids to any park, sometimes dogs don't get along well with others. It is inevitable. Generally owners are respectful when their pups have problems. If they don't get along, they aren't to play together, if they still act up they are taken home. The small dog park is visited by some larger dogs who have injuries, or who are feeble, blind, old, or scared of other big dogs. This exception to the weight limit used to be on the sign, but I am not sure if it is still there. I bet that is why there is confusion about who is allowed in that area. We have had a great time at the park, and I hope you find the same peaceful environment we have.

went to this dog park with 3 dogs and pretty much "lost" them - but in a good way! They ran around for nearly 2 hours sniffing dogs, bushes, and everything in between. Suffice it to say they were worn out and well behaved after expending all their energy at this massive park. :)

I love this park. I have stummbled upon a few scuffs however, when this happens, the owners get their dogs immediatly. Everyone is always super friendly and there are awlays tons of dogs to play with. My kids usually go with me, and they never run out of dogs to pet. This is a wonderful, clean, friendly park for the whole family! We go everyday!

Amazing Park
5

Out of all of the other parks I have been to in this area, this is BY FAR the BEST dog park in Colorado Springs! for the most part, the owners who come here are all dog lovers who are understanding and fun with their (and other) dogs. It's 25 acres, so you can go off in one corner if you'd like and have your own fun. It's so HUGE that if there happen to be aggressive dogs, you can be the "bigger man" and find another area. there's also a long running creek and many dogs love to chase each other around there. my minimal (if you could call them encounters) meetings with "aggressive" dogs pale in comparison to how much my dog loves the park and how much I love to take him there! I would recommend it to ANYONE!

Great setting

Instead of the usual dog park (open lot with little variation), this place in wonderful. My non-waterdog wades in the stream during all 4 seasons. There is a large hill to climb and many mature trees. The hike around the park is great for me too. I limit my visits to weekdays either right after dropping the kids off at school or right before I pick them up. It's usually many of the same faces at those times. Weekends tend to be erratic...people who's dogs don't get out and exercise/socialize all week and tend to be out of control that one day of the week. The park in well-tended and cared for.

Well, this is a shame. I

Well, this is a shame. I understand the owner of the aggressive dog was probably making an attempt to socialize the dog, but it makes it tough for the rest of the dogs. And shame on the dog owner for giving you "the look".

This is a great park. There a trails for the people as well as the dogs, a nice shallow stream, a big section for small dogs, clean, great views of Pikes Peak, always plenty of dogs to play with, porta-potties in the parking lot! You'll love this park.

Nice Park but...
4

This is a nice park and great for dogs to socialize. I have a little dog that is intimidated by large dogs so I keep her in the small dog area, but the other day there was a very large dog in the small dog area with a muzzle – so I am assuming it may be aggressive. My dog was barking and growling at the dog and the owner shot me an evil look, like I was the one in the wrong area. Other than the occasional rule breaking it is a nice park and most of the people are very nice.

Positive for Us
5

We adopted our year old GSD last month. He had been neglected prior to his past owners and was very shy and socially inept. We've gone to Bear Creek at least once a week since we got him, and we have yet to have a bad experience. He gets so excited to run around and play, which he's learning to do more and more. The park is in such nice condition, and most people are so friendly! It's a great change of pace from just circling the neighborhood for a walk.

Great park

I've never had an issue with any dogs that I've met in this park and my dog has lots of room to interact or go exploring on her own. The vast majority of people are very friendly, keep close tabs on their dogs, and seem very happy with their walk. The water is clean. There are several people who got out of their way to pick up the park. This is a great place to walk, socialize, and meet other dogs.

Not to bad

I honestly love this park. I have been to quite a few dog parks and this one is actually pretty good. The space and trails and the stream running through are great. I haven't encountered many aggressive dogs. I always make it a point to work on how my dog meets other dogs and try to make it a calm manor. I also do my best to read other dogs as they approach. Watching their ears and tails and how they come up can tell you a lot and you can prevent a fight. I have never had a fight at this park. We really enjoy it.

Aggressive dogs

A large breed dog with it's leash attached to its collar but not being attended by its owner. I was a bit concerned because I noticed that the large dog had not been neutered. A fight broke out with our dog having to defend himself. After that we kept away from any dog wearing a leash. There were 2 more occasions when we had severe concerns about aggression, both times when we were passing male dogs that had not been neutered and on both occasions they were doberman pinschers. The owner called his dogs and they returned to him.

My husband both felt that the negative experience this morning outweighed the fun our dog had with all the other dogs around the pool. We have witnessed similar dog fights previously and have heard visitors demand that the offending dog be taken out of the park.

Why have park rules?

I have been going to Bear Creek Dog Park for 6 years and will not go back again. The patrons of the park have discovered there is no regulation of the park rules. Lately everytime I have gone to the park someone with a large dog or dogs rationalize that they are special and are above the rules of the small dog area. When asked politely to follow the rules they adamently refuse. I am saddened by this, it used to be a great place.
